Q: Dear Dr. Neuman,This is Dr. Baret from the Dominican Republic. My mother of 86 years of age recently had a TBI which led her to a comatose state or MCS.I have been reading a lot about cases of people in coma who inexplicably responded in amazing ways to Ambien (zolpidem), to the point of coming out of coma in many cases. I know of other case where the patient was taking out of coma after 19 years in coma thanks to a regimen of psychoactive drugs.I would like to know from you which psychoactive drugs you think could de used in such cases. I will sincerely appreciate your input and suggestions. I am willing to try it all. And I am out of the US!Blesisings and thank you in advance!Regards,Dr. Miguel A. Baret-Daniel (mabd1964@icloud.com)

A: I’m afraid I can’t help you. I’m not a neurologist. I have not heard of drugs which would facilitate arousal in someone who is in a coma.
